Earthbound has launched a new wordpress demo site: demo.earthbound.com. The site lets you change themes (look for the bar across the very top) to see how easily you can change the look of a site! The demo site also lets you give the wordpress control panel a try – visit the Earthbound WordPress demo login at http://demo.earthbound.com/wp-admin – log in using the username ‘demouser’ and the password ‘demouser’. Once logged into the site you can add new posts or pages, try uploading images or any other editor feature.

Google DNS Hacked! at my local ISP

Update: as of 10:50 DNS am is restored for google.com.

Its happened, the internet is dead!

Well, nearly dead anyway – today I was suddenly unable to access Google’s Analytics service around 10:10am MST. At first i thought it was a general failure, but other sites were still working. So I issued a whois command, clearly showing google’s dns has been hacked – at least at my ISP’s DNS server – 216.237.72.66.

Web Development Enters a New Era

Web publishing platforms such as wordpress have reached a maturity level that allows developers to deploy robust websites managed and maintained by clients. The developers role becomes focused on design and implementation, while content development is client driven. Modern libraries like jQuery and the WordPress plugin mechanism mean that ideas and projects that used to taked days or weeks to implement and debug now take just moments to install and configure.

This website is a perfect illustration of the power of a modern wordpress website. For example, check out the page that lists Websites by Earthbound – this page incorporates several plugins to provide a beautiful flash slideshow (try the full screen mode), or a gallery view you can browse (try clicking an image to enlarge). Switching between the two views uses a tabbed interface. All these features are implemented using excellent, open source and commercial wordpress plugins. No custom coding was required!

Dreamweaver CS5 Beta

As a developer, I’ve learned to live with and love Adobe’s Dreamweaver CS4. Like many developers I’ve discovered my way around Dreamweaver’s little quirks and limitations. Still I anxiously await word of the next release.

I can only hope for a better FTP client and a revamped interface. What other features do you think Adobe should add to the next release of Dreamweaver?

Check Websites in Multiple Browsers

Web developers learn to work within the heterogeneous environment of the web – clients websites are used by visitors using various operating systems, and web browsers. Earthbound development environment is mac-based, but Windows users make up the majority of site visitors.

Website development requires careful testing of websites in multiple browsers. One way we to accomplish this is maintain multiple computers each running different operating systems for testing. More recently the in house approach has been maintaining multiple virtual machines – one for each browser that needs to be tested – especially Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8. But keeping these virtual machines running is challenging, so I was glad to discover a new tool for checking your website in multiple browsers without installing each operating system and browser on your computer.
